Was albo were i czasownik z -ing pokazują czynność w trakcie.
- At eight I was driving home. (O ósmej jechałem do domu.)
- It was raining and everyone was looking for a taxi. (Padało i wszyscy szukali taksówki.)
Past Simple: krótkie zdarzenie, które przerywa
Coś trwało, a potem nagle coś się stało. Dłuższa czynność idzie w Past Continuous, a ta krótka, która ją przerywa, w Past Simple.
- I was cooking when the phone rang. (Gotowałem, kiedy zadzwonił telefon.)
- She was jogging when she saw the accident. (Biegała, kiedy zobaczyła wypadek.)
When czy while?
While stawiasz zwykle przed czynnością, która trwała, więc po nim idzie Past Continuous. When częściej stoi przed krótkim zdarzeniem w Past Simple.
- While I was waiting, I checked my email. (Kiedy czekałem, sprawdziłem pocztę.)
- We were having lunch when the boss walked in.
- While I was cleaning, my husband was cooking. (Kiedy ja sprzątałam, mąż gotował.)
- I got up, had breakfast and left for work. (Wstałem, zjadłem śniadanie i wyszedłem do pracy.)
Know, want, like: bez -ing
Czasowniki stanu, takie jak know, want, like czy need, zostają w Past Simple, nawet jeśli coś trwało dłużej.
- I knew the answer, but I was too shy. (Znałem odpowiedź, ale byłem zbyt nieśmiały.)
- We wanted a bigger apartment. (Chcieliśmy większego mieszkania.)
